Carbondale, IL

August 2007-May 2009

Executive Producer/Producer/Anchor/One-Man-Band Reporter

Spent two years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, serving in various roles in WSIU-TV newsroom

Our live, student-run and award-winning newscast "River Region Evening Edition" can be seen in more than 350,000 households in parts of 5 states: southern Illinois and parts of Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee

What Is WSIU River Region Evening Edition all about? (video produced by Zlatko Filipovic)

Also worked in WSIU Radio newsroom

Recognized by the school, Illinois News Broadcasters Association, Broadcast Education Association and Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation for my work

Some of my work included hard news, breaking news, features, and an investigation for which I was recognized by the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) (more on that below)

Other coverage highlights:

Breaking News Coverage: Traveled to Jackson, Tennessee with Elizabeth O'Neal after EF4 tornado hit Union University, Feb. 2008

Coverage: Traveled to Washington, D.C. with a group of journalists for the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, Jan. 2009

In 2009, as a 23-year-old college student, I produced an  investigation into whether Southern Illinois University Carbondale violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 by re-opening the campus after a big snow storm. Many students with disabilities complained to the public university that they were not able to get to school because the sidewalks and pathways were not properly cleared. Under the supervision and guidance of my professor, distinguished journalist and former investigative producer Eileen Waldron, I filed a FOIA request with the university. The university handed over dozens of complaints that it received from students with disabilities (and from many students without disabilities) about the conditions of the campus. As a one-man-band reporter, I shot, wrote, voiced and edited the piece, and presented it during a live TV newscast. The story went on to receive an honorable mention at the 2010 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts: Faculty and Student News Awards and Exhibition, under the Student Television: Hard News Reporting Category Program.
